Day 2+3 Sossusvlei Desert Camp Distance ± 230 km

On route to Sossusvlei Desert Camp via the spectacular Spreetshoogte Pass, reportedly the steepest pass in Namibia.
stop at Solitair and proceed to Sossusvlei Desert Camp.
Solitair is a small settlement and has a fuel station which is manned daylight hours and the provisions shop opens until quite late. It's here that you might catch a glimpse of Big-Moose who bakes the 'Moose Bread' and the renowned apple crumble.

Activities: Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and sesriem Canyon - Sesriem Canyon, on the Tsauchab River, gets its name from the days when the early travelers needed to draw water from the river in the canyon and, because of its depth, tied six leather thongs together, fastened a bucket to the end and lowered it to the pools below. In Afrikaans “ses is six and “riem” is the name for the leather thongs; hence Sesriem.

Sossusvlei is generally regarded as one of the most spectacular landscapes in Namibia. The ‘vlei' itself is situated at the point where the Tsauchab River dams up at the foot of a spectacular series of sand dunes, its route to the sea blocked.  The sand that makes up these massive dunes, amongst the biggest in the world, was carried here by the east winds from central Namibia and owe their distinctive overall colour to the presence of iron oxide, with streaks of black contributed by magnetite . To give you an idea where Sossusvlei is: You may enter the gate to Sossusvlei upon sun rise and still have to travel 63km to reach the well known “Sossusvlei” and “Deadvlei”.

Desert Camp is situated on the 40,000ha Taleni Africa private reserve. Wild and dangerous animals roam freely around the reserve and may be encountered at any time. It is only four kilometres away from Sossusvlei Lodge.

The camp itself nestles under centuries old camel thorn trees, and has a 360° view over the surrounding desert landscape and mountains. The impressive dunes of the Namib Desert are never far away at Desert Camp.

In the central communal area, there is a reception, bar, swimming pool, a shared 'Boma' and public toilets. The lodge is wheelchair friendly. All guests must report to reception on arrival. Meal packs, booking meals at the nearby Sossusvlei Lodge, firewood/firelighters, eating and cooking utensils can be obtained here if required. Although Desert Camp does not currently have an internet connection, emails can be handled at the nearby Sossusvlei Lodge.

• Desert Camp: 2 x overnight on dinner, bed and breakfast basis

Day 4+5 Alte Brücke Resort Distance ± 270 km

Alte Brücke Resort is situated within walking distance of the beach, near the Swakopmund Aquarium and one of the most popular resorts on the coast.

Activity – day 5: Enjoy a 3½ hours catamaran cruise. Take close up pictures of pelican being fed in flight, Cuddle with a seal and enjoy dolphins occasionally jumping up and leaping along the catamaran. Drinks will be served all the time. Before you disembark you will be spoiled with fresh Walvis Bay oysters and sparkling wine as well as a tasty snack platter .

• Alte Brücke Resort: 2 x overnight on bed and breakfast basis

Day 6 Twyfelfontein Country Lodge Distance ± 300 km

On your way to Twyfelfontein Country Lodge , visit the Twyfelfontein area which consists of the Rock paintings, pieces of the Peatrified” forest” and rockformation called orgal pipes, some Welwitschia plants are also to be seen.

Welwitschia mirabilis in the Namib Desert of southwestern Africa. The two strap-shaped leaves have been shredded after many decades of thrashing in the desert wind.

The leaves arise from a massive woody crown or trunk (caudex) in the center. it only grows in a remote region of southwestern Africa in the Namib and Mossamedes Deserts.

Welwitschias are extraordinary plants and certainly rank among the top ten list of "most bizarre plants on earth."

Twyfelfontein Country Lodge is set amongst a mountainous backdrop, situated only 4kms from the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. It is the ideal destination to explore the attractions of Damaraland. This area, with it's susceptible and delicate ecosystem, is famous for some of the best examples of bushman engravings in Southern Africa.

The lodge is a joint venture with the Twyfelfontein-Uibasen Conservancy, an undertaking with the local community, who benefit from tourism in the area. At the same time, they become more accustomed and aware of the importance of protecting both wildlife and the immediate environment.

The deliberate use of thatch for the rooms, natural stone and paint colours, that blend in with the surrounding rock formations, minimize the visual impact on the setting. It has been built right into the rocks. Although quite a large camp, it still manages to exude a certain amount of rustic charm and charisma.

The central thatched building houses a reception, restaurant, dining room, bar, curio shop and lounge, a decent choice of areas for guests to relax and unwind in. A buffet breakfast and dinner are served in the elevated dining area, with some amazing views of the immediate scenery. It is not uncommon for some after-dinner entertainment either, provided by the staff, still in uniform, who perform local songs. The swimming pool offers a welcome relief from the hot Namibian sun, and the shaded, rocky areas, are ideal for a spot of relaxation.

The Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, boasts 56 en-suite double rooms and 1 exclusive bungalow, each with a fan. A thatched unit has 4 twin rooms, and some of the blocks overlook the valley, with fantastic sunrise and sunset views, and others face into the rock.

Day 7+8 Fort Sesfontein Distance ± 215 km

Hoanib-Tour
The Hoanib is one of the big reviers in the north of Namibia. Its water reservoirs offer living space for wild elephants, antelopes, ostrichs, giraffes and also lions. Explore and discover the variety of the African fauna in its natural surrounding and more typical than in safari parks. You will see the change of landscapes with grass velds, desert territories and mountain formations as well as the reviers as streets of Kaokoveld.

Himba-Tour

The tour is guided by a Himba tribe member of our company. We are keeping in touch with the Himba culture as authentic as possible and communicate it with dignity. The Himbas are one of the last African tribes living their nomad life in their traditional way. But how long can this form of life survive and reject the influences of modern civilization? This excursion leads from Sesfontein north into the Kaokoveld, one of the most beautiful African landscapes, and here you can contact the proud and natural tribe of the Himbas.
With your visit you contribute to the preservation and development of this endangered tribe.

You can either do the Himba Tour offered by the lodge or you can do your own HImba excursion by hiring a traditional local , however fluent English speaking guide. Once you have decided on a final itinerary I shall give you their contact details. I would obviously recommend second mentioned. You wouldn’t be time concerned and spend as much time at the different villages as it pleases you.

The lodge Fort Sesfontein – located in a wilderness area far from civilization – offers all modern facilities which guests may expect today. You will enjoy luxury with historical background. The central court of the lodge is planted with palm trees and has a generous pool. The former officer’s mess has been refurbished as a restaurant with integrated lodge and bar.

In 1896 the government of what was then German South-West Africa built Fort Sesfontein (six fountains) as a checkpoint for keeping in check cattle disease, illegal hunting and arms smuggling.

The Fort was abandoned in 1914 and only ruins and a small army cemetery still stood witness to the former presence of troops in Sesfontein.

The Fort offers comfortable double bedrooms and family units, all including bathroom/WC, for up to 44 persons. 25 local staff members are employed and do their best to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

The place offers a pleasant atmosphere with hot dry days and cool nights. After the adventures of the day and the culinary delights of the evening, you will enjoy a relaxing night below the Southern Cross and a fascinating star-studded sky. Fort Sesfontein is an oasis in the Namibian wilderness.

•Fort Sesfontein: 2 x overnight on dinner, bed and breakfast

Day 9+10 Etosha Safari Lodge Distance ± 400 km

Guests rave about the view: the restaurant and chalets, situated on a hillock, offer magnificent views of the African bush savannah. All of the 65 double room chalets have air conditioners and mosquito nets, and a choice of three swimming pools between them. Apart from the restaurant and bar there is a wooden platform for sundowners high above the Mopani bush. The Andersson Gate into Etosha National Park is a mere 9 km away.

• Etosha Safari Lodge: 2 x overnight on dinner, bed and breakfast basis

The main attraction of Okaukuejo restcamp is the waterhole. For viewing wildlife in the daytime as well as at night it is probably one of the best, if not the best, waterhole in a national park in Southern Africa. In the daytime you will always see lots of general wildlife at the waterhole as it is the main source of water in the Okaukuejo area.

Day 11+12 Waterberg Plateau Resort Distance ± 275 km

The Waterberg is gigantic orange rock with sheer sides and a flat top emerging suddenly out of a uniform scrubland is 600ft (200m) high. It is what remains of the sandstone casing which once covered large portions of Namibia, and which has formed numerous other peculiar peaks in this region. Glowing gold in late afternoon sun, the Waterberg Plateau looks too tempting to drive past.

It is sometimes referred to as the 'Lost Eden' because once up there, the animals of this lush tableland have no way down. It is as though time has stood still. It seems almost possible that a dinosaur could emerge from this unusual place, after all they once roamed the area and left a prehistoric legacy of several three-toed footprints not far from Waterberg.

This vast scrubland does not seem worth fighting over but nevertheless, it was the scene of a terrible massacre of the Herero people by German colonists in 1904. Almost the entire Herero community was decimated and a graveyard within the Waterberg Plateau Park is a poignant reminder of the dead.

At this time, Herero women under the influence of German missionaries were considered inappropriately dressed, and were trussed up in Victorian clothes from neck to ankle, including petticoats and a wide bonnet, in temperatures reaching 104°F (40°C). The Herero women subsequently adopted this garb as their traditional costume and till today wear it with great aloofness and pride.

In the shadow of the Waterberg plateau is a restful public resort with camp sites, chalets and cottages with impressive views over the surrounding savannah. Inside the resort you can go walking by yourself on marked paths leading around the plateau and up to the very edge, where you should not proceed without a guide.

The plateau itself can be explored on a Nature Conservation guided game-viewing vehicle, and although the animals are secretive, you get the sense that you are being watched - probably by a leopard.

Waterberg Camp is the new name for the government-run restcamp which used to be called Waterberg Plateau Resort . It was originally known as the Bernabe de la Bat Restcamp , and in many ways the description of 'rest camp' is much more accurate than either the new term 'camp', or the label of 'resort'.

Waterberg Camp is the gateway to the Waterberg Plateau, a spectacular collection of 200 meters above the surrounding area, from fascinating rock formations. It nestles, as it has always done, along the base of the cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau, inside the Waterberg Plateau National Park. It is the only place to stay in this national park.

Optional activities: Walking around and up to the plateau's edge, Standing beneath trees full of chattering Ruppell's parrots
Game driving to the top of the plateau, Swimming in the divine pool of the resort on the slopes of the plateau,
Watching the colours of the plateau turn golden in afternoon sun Imbibing the clean clear air
Facts:You can only access the plateau with a Nature Conservation guide either on foot or by vehicle.
This is a low-risk malarial area.

Day 13 Trans Kalahari Inn Distance ± 300 km

You can buy just about anything wooden here from attractive polished fruit bowls to carved animals and even canoes.

• Trans Kalahari Inn: 1 x overnight on bed and breakfast basis

Come and enjoy a magnificent view of the Kappsberge and the Seeisrivier from our luxurious bungalows, which are equipped with en-suite bathrooms and mini bar.
