General Information:

The Kalahari – an ancient living desert

A harsh land, a land of relentless sun and searing wind – a land of great thirst and mystery. After the first rains, a land transformed into exquisite beauty with the dunes erupting in a blaze of colour!

The Kalahari conjures up different images in the minds of different people. Some see it as a scorching desert. others see it as their future, built on cattle and sheep, ostriches and wildlife. The Kalahari is all of this, but also something more.

The word ‘ Kalahari ' means wilderness! Its relative inaccessibility, the harsh unyielding red sand dunes, the uncertain rainfall and lack of surface water, make it truly one of Africa's last frontiers.

The Kalahari Desert often surprises people when they first see it. It is very different from the Namib. First of all, remember that the Kalahari is not a desert. It receives more rain than a true desert should. The Kalahar is a fossil desert. Don't expect to find tall Sossusvlei-style dunes devoid of greenery here.

The Kalahari's dunes are very different. They are often equally beautiful, but usually greener and less stark – and with this vegetation comes its ability to support more flora and fauna than a true desert.

Thus a few days spent in a Kalahari environment adds another dimension to a trip to Namibia, and provides game-viewing away from the ever-popular Etosha, or the lush reserves of the Caprivi.

In the Realm of the red Dunes: If you are looking for world records you have to see the Kalahari: it is the largest continuous stretch of sand on the planet. The landscape is characterised by red sand dunes which reach a height of about 15-30 metres and extend over hundreds of kilometres. Chains of dunes run parallel to one another, with considerable distances between them. Now and again pans can be found in the valleys. After good rains they fill up with water but rapidly dry up again.

The red crests of the dunes contrast picturesquely with the blue sky above and the yellow grass in the wide dune valleys, while acacias add shades of dark green to the amazing symphony of colours. This magnificent scenery is inhabited by animals like Oryx antelope, Springbok, Jackal and Bat-Eared Fox. The huge nesting colonies in camel thorn trees are the handiwork of weaver birds. And speaking of world records: in the Kalahari you can encounter the heaviest flying bird, the Kori Bustard, and the largest flightless bird, the Ostrich.

Day 3+4 Canon Lodge Distance ± 300 km

* Included: Dinner, bed and breakfast.

You will leave after breakfast as you have quite a distance to drive today and you should visit the quiver tree forest at Keetmanshoop.

Kalahari Anib Lodge will prepare you a lunch pack which you can enjoy on route – the quiver tree forest would be a perfect place.

Cañon Lodge in Gondwana Cañon Park is just 20 km away from the Fish River Canyon. 25 natural stone chalets with air conditioning, en suite bathroom and thatched roofs, nestle between massive granite boulders and convey a sense of living in the lap of nature. Enjoy delicious meals at the restaurant and be transported to the pioneering days of farming by the carefully arranged décor. Read a book at leisure on the terrace shaded by trees or relax at the swimming pool with vistas beyond the Fish River Canyon.

• 2x overnight at Canon Lodge dinner, bed and breakfast basis

Sundowner Walks
Everyone is welcome to join his short excursion. Watch the sun go down with a drink to end off the lovely day.

General information:
Experience first hand the geological forces that unfolded 300 million years ago, when the Fish River began to etch its way through hard quartzite forming a Canyon 90 kilometers long, 549 meters deep and 28 kilometers wide in some places, making it the world's second largest canyon.

Eroded over millennia, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest natural gorge in Africa. Set in harsh, stony plains, dotted with drought resistant succulents such as the distinctive quiver tree or Kokerboom, the canyon is a spectacular natural phenomenon that took hundreds of millions of years to evolve. While its full length is 160km – the width is up to 27km and the depth up to 550m – it's most spectacular section is the 56-km stretch between the northernmost and southernmost viewpoints.

The attraction of this rugged mountain land is its isolated and other-worldly landscape and wealth of interesting plants. Geologically and botanically the area is similar to South Africa's Richterveld south of the Orange River. The long-term conservation objective is to manage this area jointly with the Richtersveld National Park as one integrated Transfrontier Conservation Area which was realized in 2003.

The Nama Karoo marks the western fringe of the summer rain area. It is wedged between the tree and shrub savannah in the east and the Namib Desert in the west. Rains are scarce (on average 80-220 mm per year) and usually come as a vehement, brief thunderstorm limited to a small area. The air is very dry. Temperatures may soar to over 40 degrees in summer, while they may also drop below zero in winter. Plant life is dominated by annual grasses, dwarf shrubs and stem succulents such as the quiver tree and milk bush; larger trees are only found along the dry riverbeds. Typical animals are oryx antelope, ostrich and kudu.

• Quivertree                                                               • Fishriver Canyon

Day 5 Namib Desert Lodge Distance ± 475 km

* Included: Dinner, bed and breakfast

After breakfast you will leave the Fish River Lodge. Today you will have a whole morning to drive which will mostly be on gravel roads. After about 2 hours driving you will be driving in the Namib Naukluft Park, all the way till you reach the Namib Desert Lodge.

The main building and the chalets of Namib Desert Lodge are spread out along the foot of the fossilised dunes of the ancient Namib. A comfortable sojourn is guaranteed by 65 en suite rooms with air conditioning. A restaurant and bar, an inviting terrace with views of the fossilised dunes and two swimming pools beckon you to linger and relax. Oryx antelope and springbok make frequent appearances at our illuminated watering place.

2 x Overnight at Namib Desert Lodge on dinner, bed and breakfast basis

Day 6 Solitair Country Lodge Distance ± 350 km

* Included: Dinner, bed and breakfast, permits and park fees, visit to the vlei, dead vlei, Sesriem canyon, lunch packs prepared by Namib Desert Lodge for the excursion to Sossusvei

You will be visiting Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and sesriem Canyon which is included.

General information:
Sesriem Canyon, on the Tsauchab River, gets its name from the days when the early travelers needed to draw water from the river in the canyon and, because of its depth, tied six leather thongs together, fastened a bucket to the end and lowered it to the pools below. In Afrikaans “ses is six and “riem” is the name for the leather thongs; hence Sesriem

Sossusvlei – many visitors to Namibia say that no part of the desert is visually more stunning than Sossuvlei with its monumentally high dunes. These gigantic star-shaped mountains of sand – one of the largest was measured from the base to be 325 m high – are a sought-after topic for artists and photographers. The warm tints of the sand contrast vividly with the dazzling white surface of the large deflationary clay pans at their bases.
One of these referred to as Dead Pan, is a large ghostly expanse of dried white clay, punctuated by skeletons of ancient Camelthorn trees, carbon-dated as being between 500 and 600 years old.

Namib Desert: At 20 million years old the Namib is seen as the oldest desert on earth. It covers the entire coastline in a strip about 100 km wide, from Angola down to South Africa. Due to many individual features, however, scientists regard the section south of Lüderitz as a separate desert - the Succulent Karoo. The central Namib consists of enormous mountains of sand; at the Sossusvlei clay pan you can climb the highest dunes on earth.

Rain is a rare occurrence in the Namib (5 to 85 mm per annum), but coastal fogs supply some moisture quite regularly. Summers can be very hot and winters very chilly. The dry rivers with their subterranean watercourses form oasis lines.

•Sesriem Canyon                               • Deadvlei at Sossusvlei                 • Dunes at Sossusvlei

• Dunes at Sossusvlei in rainy season

In the afternoon you will pass Solitair which is a small settlement and has a fuel station which is manned daylight hours and the provisions shop opens until quite late. It's here that you might catch a glimpse of Big-Moose who bakes the 'Moose Bread' and the renowned apple crumble.

Swakop is the country's biggest coastal town and a mecca for Namibians on holiday. Swakopmund was founded two years later than Windhoek, in 1892, by Captain Curt von Francois as the main harbour of German South West Africa. Increased traffic between Germany and its colony necessitated establishing of own port as Walvis Bay, located 33 kilometres south, was already in British possession. The choice fell on Swakopmund where water could be found and because other sites checked (including Cape Cross) were unsuitable.

Crocodile Farm a well-liked spot for locals and tourists. Meet, photograph and learn more about these remarkable reptiles, and browse around the gift shop. Which are the most vicious crocodiles?

All crocs can be vicious. They are able to attack with lightening speed and kill animals as heavy as they are. The most terrifying are the Nile and Australian crocodiles. Nile crocodiles can take down a water buffalo! They are crafty and can plot their hunting behavior to match their specific prey. The bite force of a crocodile is more than 5,000 pounds per square inch.

Crocodiles have very sharp teeth that help them in tearing and holding onto flesh. However, they cannot open their mouth if it is held closed, even with the help of an adhesive tape.

Crocodiles are much more closely related to birds and dinosaurs than the other reptiles. The sex of a crocodile is determined on the basis of its temperature. Males are produced at around 31.6 deg C and females, at slightly lower or higher temperature.

Day 11 Drotskys Cabin Distance ± 220 km

* Included: Dinner, bed and breakfast

Today is a short and easy distance to travel except for the last 15 kilometers to the lodge we will be driving through very thick sand.

Drotskys Cabin: Drotsky’s Cabins on the western panhandle of the Okavango Delta, near Shakawe in the north-western corner of Botswana, is one of the original lodges in the country and especially popular amongst tourists keen on fishing and/or birding. Drotsky’s Cabins is a family business, and since it has been here for a long time, its owners are extremely knowledgeable about the Shakawe area, as well as the flora and fauna in this part of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Guests at Drotsky’s Cabins are accommodated in six A-frame chalets overlooking the wide Okavango River. The chalets are simple, clean and comfortable, and exude the charm of years gone by. The bar at Drotsky’s Cabins is also frequented by locals, apart from tourists, so you are guaranteed to hear some fascinating stories about the Shakawe region of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The dining area overlooks the Okavango River
The papyrus channels and lush vegetation of the river make Drotsky’s Cabins a haven for fishing and birdwatching. Also be on the lookout for hippos and crocs in the Okavango River. Botswana’s famous Barbel run takes place sometime between August to October and Drotsky’s Cabins in the Okavango Delta is the place to experience this phenomenon. The fish congregate in schools of thousands. The fish then swim upstream, slapping their tails on the water as they swim through the thick papyrus reeds in the river. Apparently this slapping noise disorientates the smaller species of fish in the Okavango River and they become easy prey. The noise and frenzy attract lots of birds, as well as tiger fish – so if it’s a tiger fish you are after, come to Drotsky’s Cabins near Shakawe in the Okavango Delta.

Drotsky’s Cabins is very popular for boating and offers a number of guided boats of varying sizes. Lawrence of the Okavango is a boat with legendary status in this part of the Okavango Delta near Shakawe. Fishing tackle is available on site.
The Mahango Game reserve is a mere 2 km away, offering excellent opportunities to view elephant, buffalo, red lechwe and sable antelope, to name a few, in typical riverine and swampland habitat.
No activities are included as the optional activities vary from game viewing to river cruises and visit to the Popa Falls – decision lies with you and can be discussed with the Tour Guide.

General information:

The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest inland water systems. It's headwaters start in Angola's western highlands, with numerous tributaries joining to form the Cubango river, which then flows through Namibia (called the Kavango) and finally enters Botswana, where it is then called the Okavango. Millions of years ago the Okavango river use to flow into a large inland lake called Lake Makgadikgadi (now Makgadikgadi Pans).

Tectonic activity and faulting interrupted the flow of the river causing it to backup and form what is now the Okavango Delta.

This has created a unique system of water ways that now supports a vast array of animal and plant life that would have otherwise been a dry Kalahari savannah.

The delta environment has large numbers of animal populations that are otherwise rare, such as crocodile, red lechwe, sitatunga, elephant, wild dogs, buffalo, wattled crane as well as the other more common mammals and bird life. The best time for game viewing in the delta is during the May-October period, as the animal life is concentrated along the flooded areas and the vegetation has dried out.

• 1x overnight at Gweta Lodge on dinner, bed and breakfast basis

General information:
Makgadikgadi Pans - formed by the separation of Australia and Southern Africa, this land that was a lake five million years ago, became the base of the African Rift Valley. Although the water that once filled the pans has now shifted north to the rivers that flow over Victoria Falls, the area is still subject to annual flooding. The two pans offer great contrasts throughout the seasons. These vast open areas of dry winter saltpans turn into the huge wetlands of the Makgadikgadi, and the grassy open plains and woodland of Nxai Pan during summer. It is the largest salt flat complex in the world (about the size of Portugal), covering 16,000 square km.

Day 16+17 Chobe Safari Lodge Distance ± 220 km

* Included: Dinner, bed and breakfast

Our close proximity to Victoria Falls International Airport, Livingstone International Airport and Kasane International Airport makes us easily accessible, with daily road transfers or charter flights connecting all these airports with Chobe Safari Lodge.
