Swakopmund, known as Swakop, is situated on the coast of Namibia, and is surrounded by the Namib Desert, which is said to be the oldest desert in the world.
Swakop is the country's biggest coastal town and a mecca for Namibians on holiday. Swakopmund was founded two years later than Windhoek, in 1892, by Captain Curt von Francois as the main harbour of German South West Africa. Increased traffic between Germany and its colony necessitated establishing of own port as Walvis Bay, located 33 kilometres south, was already in British possession.
The choice fell on Swakopmund where water could be found and because other sites checked (including Cape Cross) were unsuitable. The Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre is a centrally positioned four-star hotel. It is built in and around the old Station Building in Swakopmund and dates back to 1901. After extensive renovations, it has been restored to its former Victorian glory, and has been opened as one of the towns premier hotel's since the end of 1994. Marine cruise: As you set out to explore the intriguing Atlantic, Pelicans follow the catamaran while being handfed in flight.
Cormorants and seagulls also try to snap away a fish. While cruising along the ever growing peninsula you could encounter leaping dolphins in front of the vessel. The three most common type dolphins are Heavyside, Dusky & Bottlenose. You have the opportunity to make personal contact with one or other seal that jump on board.
Refreshments, sparkling wine with fresh Walvis Bay Oysters and light lunch will be served. Sandwich Harbour 4x4: A thrilling dune drive awaits you and you could be fortunate enough to see springbuck, ostrich and jackals along the way. Besides the pristine dune landscapes, your guide will enlighten you to the history of the fragile eco-system on the Namib Desert having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for at least 55 million years. It is considered to be the oldest desert in the world after the Atacama Desert in Chile

Day 8:
The Living Desert Tour, originally developed by Tommy himself, is a unique 4x4 adventure drive through the dunes outside Swakopmund, Namibia. Just the drive in the dunes is an amazing experience, but Tommy will show you a lot more than sand. The tour takes you from the vegetated, life-rich eastern side of the dunes, right through the dunes to the Atlantic Ocean on the western side of the dune belt.
Tommy introduces you to some of the fascinating, hidden life in this apparently barren landscape that is part of the Namib Desert. Here you can find creatures endemic to the Namib: the sidewinder (Peringuey's Adder), the Palmato Gecko with its transparent skin and beautiful colours - we dig into the dune side to find this nocturnal desert-dweller. We track the large Namaqua Chameleon, and watch it enjoy brunch. Then it's a dash to catch the swift sand-diving lizard.
