Smaller animals include the honey badger, warthog and bat-eared fox. A bird population of some 340 species and an important breeding ground for the greater and lesser flamingos in southern Africa. The main area of the Etosha National Park is covered by a huge salt pan, 129 km long and up to 72 km wide. During the rainy season the pan resembles a huge lake, but this soon evaporates during the dry season, leaving behind a shimmering sediment causing mirages to play havoc on the eyes. A visit during the dry season, May to October, is certainly the most rewarding time for game viewing. Huge herds of game assemble at the waterholes in the early mornings and before dusk, entertaining the audience with their different antics.
