Vast - Perhaps Even Immeasurable

‘Vast’ is a term which is almost synonymous with Namibia!
This incredible land offers a vast array of cultures and languages – over 30 to be exact, 23 of them being living indigenous languages.
Vast open spaces; Namibia is one of the least populated countries in the world, with only 3 – 4 people per square kilometer. One can travel for hours without seeing a single dwelling, or human being.
Yet another notable use of the word ‘vast in Namibia are the vast travelling distances. Yet, as each landscape morphs into a different and unique space, the distances merge and may seem almost immeasurable.
When the wind whips the dust into the air, the mountain ranges in the distance appear to multiply and seem layered like a watercolour painting.
Endless tracks in the red sand lead through golden grassy plains to far destinations an unimaginable and immeasurable distance away.
In the dark, clear night sky over Namibia, the stars are truly uncountable; in the Milky Way, the dense number of stars gives the name it’s true meaning and at times they appear so close, you might reach out to try to touch them – light years away, yet immeasurably abundant, bright and fascinating.

‘Immeasurable’ describes the numbers of birds and animals in Namibia; numbers that ebb and flow as the seasons change, when frequent drought or good rainy seasons suppress, or in turn bring forth a multitude of new life.
This may be seen as the animals graze on the open grassy plains of the savannah, or perhaps they are cleverly hidden from predators, with unique colouring and instinctive stillness against sandy backgrounds.
Birds nest in virtually uncountable numbers in Communal Weavers grassy ‘condo’s’, or settle down over their eggs in shallow depressions in the rocky ground.
Pink flamingos fly single file in long lines over the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, with the undulating pink line of the birds in flight seeming to have no beginning, and no end…
And then, there is the tranquility: powerful silences, interrupted only by the rustle of the grass blowing around the magical desert fairy circles, the crash of the waves on the beach, the distant roar of a lion calling his pride or the haunting call of the African Fish Eagle.
Your senses are filled with endless distances coloured by a range of fiery hues as the sun sets in the west, and shadowy dunes or rocky mountain ranges which emerge from the dawn to form undulating curves of golden sand and rocky ridges.
Namibia evokes a yearning within you to contemplate beyond the farthest horizon, that your existence may be part of something eternal. As boundless as this land, your thoughts expand as you reflect on your place in this world, your journey of a single lifetime and the deeper meaning of how you live each day.
Last, but by no means least and as immeasurable as the friendliness and eagerness of Namibia’s people, is our pride in our country.
